Incubus: S.C.I.E.N.C.E
The sophmore release from Incubus is seen as their most adventurous and slickly produced album to date. They explore the waters of funk, metal, punk and hip hop. They draw thier influences from bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mr. Bungle and Primus. All of these influences show very vividly on this album. The spontaneity of Mr. Bungle is shown on songs such as Nebula, Calgone and Deep Inside. They also show classic funk influences on songs like Summer Romance(Anti Gravity Love Song) and Deep Inside. This album is what Incubus was originally supposed to sound like. However, most people who got turned on to Incubus after Morning View would hear this and not recognize the songs as Incubus. They started as this funny, kickass funk metal band, but that style deteriorated into the Morning View sound. I think "real" Incubus ended after Make Yourself. In the new type of music, the band members are not able to show off their skills as much as they were able to in previous albums. The slapperiffic bass skills of Dirk Lance are shown on songs such as Redefine, New Skin and A Certain Shade of Green. Mike Einziger was able to show his funky side in songs like Deep Inside, Summer Romance and Glass. This type of playing from Einziger is no longer seen on albums like Morning View and A Crow Left of the Murder. I look at the new Incubus as a different band than the one that made albums like SCIENCE and Fungus Amongus. The new stuff is still good and listenable but it's not how they originally sounded. I don't mind it when a band matures, but I wish that Incubus would've stayed a little closer to their roots. But as Einziger says, "I never want to make the same album twice."
