'Saucerful' is the album in which Roger Waters first shows signs of things to come, taking over the main songwriting job. "Let There Be More Light" and "Set the Controls" are easily the best songs on the album. Syd Barret of course was fading fast and David Gilmour makes his mark as the replacement who would soon forge his own sound with the band. Here, however, he sticks a little to Syd's 'Piper' sound. Syd is still present, contributing "Jugband Blues" a song who's lyrics are very telling of how he felt at the time. Rick Wright is no slouch either. "Remember a Day" is an underestimated psychedelic classic. The album's centerpiece is the longform title song. "Saucerful" is a build-up, starting off with quiet noises, leading to a more chaotic middle, and a great ending with a chorus of voices. The band takes a huge leap forward from the masterpiece "Interstellar Overdrive." Not only can you see how they would evolve to "Echoes", but even this early on they were laying musical groundwork that bands such as Godspeed You Black Emperor are taking to great new heights more than thirty years later. So for any Pink Floyd fan, this album is essential. New fans should steer clear, picking up the albums from 'Dark Side' to 'The Wall' first. I think this would be way too out there for you. For the Floyd fan who finds himself overdosed on that period of the band this is perfect though. Also, any fan of todays art rock giants should check this out to see how it all began (along with 'Atom Heart Mother and 'Meddle')
