Band: Deep Purple -- DVD: Live in Concert 72/73
The first concert takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1972. It is in black and white, and due to the fact that there were few recordings like this made at the time and the Denmark TV crew was inexperienced, the camera work is rather poor at times. Closeups of the wrong guys during solos is common, especially with Ritchie Blackmore, who is nearly unseen during the first two songs. However, the music in the first concert alone makes this worthwhile. They open with "Highway Star," which, as Gillian said, would remain their opening number for the next year or so. As opening with a new song made them nervous, they quickly use a more familiar song after it, namely "Strange Kind of Woman," which features a guitar-vocal duel. While the band (at the time) enjoyed this part so much that they would occasionally go have another one at the end, they were "just doing the one tonight" (as Gillian stated at the beginning of that section.) "Child in Time" is extended to over 20 minutes, and features extensive jams on both organ and guitar. "The Mule" features the concert's only drum solo. "Lazy," a 12-bar-blues that had been used as an extended jam song before, was cut back to make room for "Space Truckin," the epic jam used to finish the concert. The encore includes "Fireball," "Lucille," and "Black Night." The second concert was in New York New York in 1973 and is in color. ABC's crew was far more experienced and did this work more regularly, so the camera work is superior. However, this was originally featured in a 30-minute block of television time with commercials between songs, so a few edits have been made. "Strange Kind of Woman" is missing the first two verses, as well as the first solo. "Smoke on the Water" is missing the guitar solo and the third verse, and "Space Truckin" is missing the guitar solo. However, this section is still enjoyable, especially the last track, in which Lord plays one of the most amazing keyboard solos ever. This DVD also includes a single song from California in 1974. This song, "Burn," features the MK3 lineup, in which Coverdale and Hughes replace Gillian and Glover. Hughes needs to turn his bass down a bit as to let Blackmore and Lord be better heard, but other than that, it's a great performance.
