I have been playing guitar, both acustic and electric, for about a year, and for the last month i have been experiencing a good deal of pain in my fretting hand's wrist. There is not one incident that is linked to it (for instance "i hurt it skateboarding, and it isn't getting better") the pain just started. On to the point. Should i give guitar a break for a while untill it heals? It really hurts to play. I can't even pick up the guitar in that hand for more than a few seconds. Is it something i should be concerned about?

most definately you should stop playing. I've learned from experience that it's a horrible idea to play through pain. If the pain is really as bad as you described then I would go to the doctor. Until then put ice on and take some ibuprofen.

Well, it's natural. If your body says "no," then it's time to have a break.

I guess there's no point in talking about the right hand positioning (the fretting hand wrist should not be bent) since the cause is not the guitar.

Have a break!

Yeah, if it is like you say, I'd say it's pretty serious. It may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.

There's a little 'passage way' in your wrist called the carpal tunnel. Through it goes all the nerves and blood vessels to your hand. What happens there is that when your wrist is in a certain position for a while (i.e. fretting position, typing position), the muscles around the carpal tunnel contract, making the nerves and vessels to you hand constricted. This leads to very limited mobility of the hand, or even complete non-mobility. If it gets anywhere near that bad, there's about an 80% chance you have to get surgery. And if it's bad enough, even surgery can't completely reverse the effects. Even if tehre is the slightest hint of pain in your wrist, you really should stop and see a doctor. But since yours looks really bad, I strongly suggest you see a doctor as soon as physically possible.

How low do you sling your guitar?

You know, that is one of the major causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.
