what fingers would you use to hybrid pick something like what I have below, the intro to the Dead's Althea (an epic song btw) and what do you do with the pick whilst this is going on? what fingers do you hold the pick with?

I beleive you hold the pcik as you normally would (thumb & index) and finger pick with the other fingers.

Thumb and forefinger for holding the pick. The way i organise my fingers and pick is thus: Pick plays the 3 bass notes E. A. D. Middle finger plays G string only, Ring finger plays B string only, and little finger plays E string only. I expect there are others who have their own ways of doing things, but that is what works for me. and that is the way i teach it. biggrin.gif

That's pretty much how I do it.

Which ever way works for you easiest is of course the best way. Myself, I use my pick held in my thumb and index as is normal and then use mostly my middle (and very occasionally my ring when needed). But that's because I approach it from the "Dominant Finger" fingerstyle direction, as opposed to the "Classical Style" where each finger has an assigned string. Either is fine.

(Actually I would more often tend to not use the pick at all and just use my thumb and finger(s), but if you generally play with a pick anyway any of the techniques mentioned in the above posts is fine.)

Un-plugged is not the same as never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.

Exactly. I was always stunned with Rory Gallagher's hybrid picking of country blues covers. It's amazing that it can be done this way too. But as I never use picks, I'd rather do it bare fingered.

You can also do passages like that as Dadfad said, doing the trebles mainly with the middle finger. I imagine this could be done the classical way Rick suggested, it's just if I held the pick between the thumb and index, the remaining fingers somehow wouldn't have enough space to move freely.

No one actually taught me how to do hybrid picking. It's just something I started trying one day and it worked out.

I don't use my pinky that much, preferring the middle and ring finger, but the pinky is used sometimes when needed.

Then again, you could always chop your middle finger off at the first knuckle like Jerry so you can switch on the fly without missing a beat.
