I love the Englishness of this news story. An explorer called Colonel John Blashford-Snell discovered a rare species of dog, with two noses. Xingu is said to be fond of salty biscuits, and 'the chairman of the Scientific Exploration Society said the dog, named Xingu, was "not terribly handsome".'

"I was sober at the time, and then I remembered the story that the legendary explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett came back with in 1913 of seeing such strange dogs in the Amazon jungle.

"Nobody believed him, they laughed him out of court."

Oh, the toff-ness.

I bet when he first saw this dog, he either said "Crikey!" or "I say!".

It does reek rather of Sir Henry (Viv Stanshall).

Not terribly handsome either!

If it was in America wouldn't it already be shot and hanging on a wall?

"Xingu, I presume?"

John - what on earth is that? Looks like a rabbit with hand-like antlers.

Why... ummm... yes. As a matter of fact, my son used to have the head of one mounted and hanging on his bedroom wall when he lived at home and was about ten years old.

(He actually did. The existense of the "jackalope" as they were called was a longtime spoof-joke played on "dudes" (tourists or visitors from "back-East") by locals in the Western states back in the days of "the Old West." My son found one of these that someone had concocted and stuffed by a taxidermist back then in an old antique shop in Montana while we were on a family vacation we took when he was young. I thought it was tacky, not to mention cruel, but he thought it was so "cool" and wanted it so badly (it cost most of the money he was allowed to spend over the entire vacation) (and since both of the unlucky animals had been dead for close to a century) I let him buy it. His little buddies were all quite impressed by it as well when he got home. It was eventually replaced on his wall by a Metallica poster. It's probably in some trunk or other in our attic at this very moment awaiting the day when it will once more hang proudly on someone's wall.)
