I started by picking up fingerstyle magazine, and I just challenged myself. I literally only learned a few bars at a time, and I would work at them until I had mastered them, and then the next few bars. Aside from that, blackbird by the beatles is a good starter to work on some of the dexterity required. My favourite fingerstyle song is a flamenco called el choclo - seriously fun to play!

I agree Blackbird is a good introductory tune to fingerstyle.
There are different kinds of fingerstyle, including pattern picking, Travis picking, alternating thumb-bass and others, some geared more for classical guitar and others for more "informal" styles like old-blues, ragtime, etc.
Another good beginner's tune might be "Freight Train Blues" by Elizabeth Cotten. A folk-blues tune where a beginner can start to become familiar with using his thumb independently from his or her other fingers.
Un-plugged is not the same as never-was-plugged-in-to-begin-with.
