altitudes911, the sound hole doesn't necessarily need to be below the strings. I believe the soundboard (basically the top face of the guitar) is responsible for vibrating most of the sound inside the guitar. the holes are there so the sound can escape and sound louder and brighter. Look at a violin, that's how they are built/work. the holes on a violin are on either side of the strings, not directly under it.
