In your situation, I'd go with the BJ. It's a very good sounding amp, loud enough for small gigs yet reasonably small for playing at home. If you ever play gigs where you need to be louder than what the BJ can offer naturally, you can always mic your amp up.

The hum you get is related to a ground loop problem with you USB port, not to the POD.

No, it's definitely just a matter of switching jacks. It does not work on some pedals though. I remember trying it on a Morley wah and getting absolutely no sound out of it.
