#3510192 What are you reading?

Posted by TheNewSponge on 27 June 2017 - 04:22 PM

I'm currently reading:

Catch 22

The Fellowship Of the Ring

100 Years of Solitude

The Complete Joy of Homebrewing

A guide to canning and preserving

A biography of Elon Musk.

But I am a damn slow reader, so there is a good chance I'll still be reading most of these in a year...

#3508343 What ye NOT be listening to?

I was a punk in high school. The metalheads just seemed so dumb that I couldn't befriend them. And their music was kind of a lot like mine (ie: loud as fuck), but it was so super boring. Punk was fun, fast and melodic, and it could be about skating and drinking and partying and chilling, or pretty super political and philosophical. It was diverse and interesting. I just haven't found much metal that doesn't just go into shitty metal tropes. Like, we get it, blood and satan and violence and a loud guitar and a shitty bassist. I'm sorry the girl you liked in middle school didn't like you back.

I do like some druggy/doomy stuff, and some Slayer and Metallica and Megadeath, but less and less often as I get older.

U2's work up until Achtung Baby was pretty good stuff. They haven't been good much since then though. And Bono's preachy superdouche persona doesn't win any favours.

I like the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, and country, and rap and hiphop, and classical, and bluegrass. I don't gravitate to heavy guitar based music, or opera, but otherwise I spend a lot more of my limited time liking things instead of not liking things.

#3507659 Apple vs. PC

Posted by TheNewSponge on 03 March 2017 - 04:17 PM

Based on my own anecdotal evidence, I don't get the longevity argument. Previous $500 PC laptop lasted 5 years without a (serious) problem, current $600 PC desktop going on 6, which I still play video games on (in a fairly low resolution, and the speakers turned way up to drown out the wheezing, but still), current $600 laptop going on 5. Wife has gone through probably 5 laptops in the same 10 year period, but she most of those died due to coffee being poured directly into them or just dropping them all over.. But then, her Macbook Pro (or whatever) from 2002 probably made it to  2008 or 2009 before dying, but she paid $4000 for it...

So maybe just take care of it, whatever it is

We're only like 3.5 people per square km. So we have tons of room.

Have you got room for 16 million terrified Remain voters?

You can have all of Nunavut, in fact.

Typical Whitey, giving away land that doesn't belong to you..

I applied to get into to teacher school. If that doesn't work, I'll do my LSAT and apply to law school. I've educated myself into unemployability, and I'll educate myself right out.

My favourite things should be everyone's favourite things because I am a paragon of culture and taste.

#3504257 What's bummed you out today?

Posted by TheNewSponge on 25 November 2016 - 04:18 PM

Days are short, nights are long. Work from dark to dark, too many days in a row. At a job I hate more every day.

creative ideas for grinding coffee beans without a grinder - go gtu go!

I assume you solved this problem 3 days ago, but you can get a coffee grinder at Walmart for like $7.

We are the watchers on the wall etc.

In other news, I am weirdly fascinated by Rosamund Pike. Like, she seems inhuman, but she's one of the very best versions of inhuman maybe. I dunno. Dammit. Time to dig out all that red paint.

After watching Gone Girl, I think I said something along the lines of: She's like a mannequin turned human by a wizard who's not very good at wizarding.

kids? i don't even want a cat

That's because cats are objectively shit.

Dogs are cool.  Guinea Pigs and rabbits are cool.  Goats are incredibly cool.

Rabbits will piss up the walls. Guinea pigs are much cleaner. Good eatin' too.

i love you guys but you're all feely and shit.

Seriously, we seem to be off the routine. This is how (modern) GTU works:  Major (or someone else) posts an interesting thing/thought, and the rest of us (read: I) ignore it and make dick jokes and that sorta shit. And then woody comes in at the end and shows us the horrifying depths of inhumanity.

In most ways that count that book has shaped a lot of who I am now and how I see the world. It was my introduction to absurdity on a massive scale. I still try to reread it every few years. I keep 2 copies so I can lend/gift one to anyone who hasn't read it.

"People who cannot recognize a palpable absurdity are very much in the way of civilization."

plz send book to me. the library won't let me back for ...reasons.

I once did nothing exciting. Then I continued that for 32 years.
